2.37 describe experiments to investigate the evolution of carbon dioxide and heat from respiring seeds or other suitable living organisms.

Investigating Respiration

Hydro-carbonate indicator turns from orange to yellow in the presence of carbon dioxide.
Experiment for Carbon Dioxide

  1. Get some germinating beans and some dead boiled ones. Place them in a two separate test tubes, on a gauze above some hydro-carbonate indicator.
  2. The alive beans will respire and turn the indicator from orange to yellow. The alive beans will not respire so the indicator will not change.

Experiment for Heat

  1. Take two test tubes, one full of alive beans, the other full of dead beans.
  2. Place a thermometer in both and measure the temperatures. The one with the alive beans should show an increase in temperature.
